Is that what I meant?

I saw this graphic on Natalie’s blog the other day and it hit so close to home here at HC Miller. Communication or lack thereof is a pain point we all feel. Project managers deal with this all the time. A person says one thing, you design and deliver another. I have fallen into that trap myself and I feel I’m not alone.

Please leave some comments if you agree or disagree and what tools do you use to keep from falling into this communications trap.

My Point of View – Thank You Cards

I had the pleasure of hearing PR expert Peter Shankman speak as part of the PRSA‘s 10th anniversary event in Green Bay. One of his key take-a-ways was to be “top of mind” with your network and used the president of Paramount Studios as a great example.

My take on being “top of mind” is sending thank you cards. Personalized, hand written thank you cards are so under used in my opinion. What an impact it sends when you go to your mail box and get a personal thank you card or note. Who uses snail mail anymore? Thats the point, why get your thank you’s lost in the clutter of email, twitter DM or facebook message…make an impact with a hand written thank you!

I put together a PDF file of all the tweets that took place during the PRSA event. Transcript for #prsanew

Winner Winner- Chicken Dinner, Picked On Twitter

As the team at HC Miller ends yet another successful multi-channel marketing campaign, one question keeps coming up: “How do you pick a winner with style and keep it fair?” Well after thinking about this for a few moments, I said, “let’s have twitter do the work for us.”

After the campaign closed and I downloaded the results from our Mindfire system, I saw there were 170 respondents to the campaign that qualified for the free iPod. I sent out one tweet that said “Help me pick a winner.. pick a number between 1 and 171.. picking a winner of a free iPod touch 4th gen.” Within moments, our good local twitter friend @markdavidzahn came in with the winning pick. Sorry Carrie, number 1 was the header line, I should have asked for 2-170, my bad! :<

ipodsaletweetSo awesome to see the power of twitter and the help you can get from a simple tweet. The winner works for a Distributor in Minneapolis, MN and plans to raffle the prize off to internal employees soon.  Hopefully she will win twice!

Thanks Twitter for your help and thank you to all of the 170 people who responded to our campaign. There will be many more campaigns where that came from… so stay tuned!

Graph Expo and My Trip to the Kodak’s K-Zone

This week was my yearly homage to Graph Expo in Chicago, IL. The same trip that I have taken each year for the past 14 years straight.  Aside from having my brand new iPhone 4G stolen, it was a pretty great trip. I love seeing the latest and greatest the graphic arts industry has to offer. Along with networking, learning about all things toner, ink jet and binding, I was asked to participate in a panel discussion in Eastman Kodak‘s K-Zone. A talk show style discussion on different graphic arts related topics. I was asked to participate in the workflow discussion moderated by Bryan Yeager from InfoTrends. I sat on the panel along with Steve Miller from Kodak  and John Henderson fellow GUA Board member from The Bureau. below is a small snippet of the 30 min chat…

My Point of View – Invest in Yourself

In my last “My Point of View’ I talked about innovation as a company. Today I want to address personal innovation and investing in yourself. Why should you be any different then the business you work for. My 3-step plan will have you bettering yourself on a daily basis.

Step 1. Read. You need to get your nose deep in industry blogs and websites. The info is there, you just need to find it. Using a tool like google reader will help make this possible.

Step 2. Network. There are so much to learn from other. Be visible and put yourself out there. Involving yourself in the local chamber and social media is one great way to meet great people and learn from them.

Step 3. Share. Share what you have with others. Serve others. Giving back to the community is one way to learn, grown and innovate. Never take this for granted.

Do these 3 things and you are well on your way to investing and bettering yourself.
